There is NO training required.

Do I need a notary bond or E&O Insurance?

Notary bonds and insurance are not required for Virginia notaries. E&O insurance (Errors and Omissions) is optional for Virginia notaries but highly reccommended for protection against any damages that result from misconduct or negligence. We do offer E&O insurance for Virginia notaries and you can get it here

What are the costs?
  • The application fee of $45.00 plus $10.00 fee once taken oath
  • If you decide to get E&O insurance, these prices vary depending on the term and coverage
  • Notary supplies (this will vary depending on what items you get)

What notary supplies will I need?

Virginia notaries are required to have a notary seal with the following information:
  • Name of Notary (as appears on notary certificate)
  • Notary Public

If a Virginia notary decides to purchase a notary embosser, a seal impression inker is recommended to be used in order to make the raised impression photographically reproduced.

Although a notary journal is not required, we highly recommend having this for keeping all of the performed notarizations in order. This may be extremely beneficial in case a notary was to need a form of proof that the notarization was performed correctly.

Is there any legal risk in performing notarial acts?

Yes, due to the fact that a notary grants certain responsibilities and permissions. This is why we would recommend E&O insurance to be safe.

How long does a commission last in Virginia?

Notary commissions in Virginia are valid for a 4-year term.
