No training course is required.

Do I need a notary bond or E&O Insurance?

A South Carolina notary is not required to purchase a surety bond to protect the signers against financial damages that may result from the Notary’s misconduct or negligence. A surety bond protects the public, not the notary.

However, notaries can insure themselves against any possible legal costs or damages by purchasing optional E&O Insurance (Errors and Omissions). This is not required by law but an E&O policy will cover legal fees and damages up to the amount of the policy.

What are the costs?

  • The application fee is $25.00
  • Filing the official commission with the Clerk of Court will be a $10.00 fee.
  • If you decide to get E&O insurance, these prices will vary depending on the term and coverage
  • Notary supplies (notary stamp & notary seal)
